Knowing to replace your existing pillow:
But before we get in the main scheme of things, it is very important for you to know that no pillow lasts forever. No matter how they are or how good the materials used in its making are, there will come a time when you will need to replace it. There are numerous ways to know whether your bed pillow has anything left in them or not. Here are those tips:
Thinking about how you wake up in the morning;
This is a very good way to know whether your pillow is past its prime or not. When you wake up in the morning and if you have a stiff neck or sore shoulder, this is a clear indication that it is time to get rid of it and bring home a new one. Pillows, when they become over used, tend to lose its shape disallowing the head and the neck to not rest on it properly. This is what causes that un- explainable stiffness in the neck and back. So if you feel that these morning discomforts are persistent for a week or so, that is where you know that it is time to kiss your existing pillow good bye!
Properly examine your bed pillow:
Put the pillow on a flat surface and checking it out properly. If it takes some time, so be it. The reason why I say this is because it will give you a clear idea whether the pillow still has something to offer or not. If you find that the pillow has some bumps on it or it is lumpy in its shape, it means that the pillow is nearing its demise. Usually such dents form on the spot where you lay your head every night.
Also at night if you find that you have to punch or fluff it back to its original shape, then it also implies that it is time to say farewell to that pillow and bring home a new one.
Cater to the folding test:
This is a very common way to know whether the pillow is alright or not. Fold the pillow in about half its length and put your hand atop its surface. Hold it like that for about half a second or so and release it. If the pillow is able to fall back to its original shape without much problems, it means that it still has some time, but it the situation is vice-versa, then be on the lookout for an alternate option.
Considering the tile span of your pillow
Usually the normal span of a pillow, irrespective of whatever brand it may be, is two years. If say you use it properly, one can add another 3-4 months to the total life span, but not more than that. So on that analysis, if you know that you existing pillow is about to complete 24 months or so, keep in mind that the time has come to bring home a brand new one.
Also when pillows reach its end, you may find dead skin, dust mites and numerous allergens accumulating inside it. This is bad as it could lead to nasal congestion or other such disorders. Due to the presence of such allergens, the pillow can weight down and become flat or out of shape. So if you find your pillow’s story of similar plane, replace it on the double!
